Area Calculator: Plot Area in Sq Ft, Sq M, Gaj, Acre and Guntha

Use this area calculator to work out the area of a plot or piece of land from its measurements. Pick the shape, enter the sides in feet, metres or yards, and see the area at once in square feet, square metres, square yards (gaj), acres, hectares, guntha, cents and marla.

How to use the area calculator

  1. Choose the plot shape: rectangle or square, triangle, or a four-sided plot.
  2. Choose the unit you measured in: feet, metres or yards (gaj).
  3. Enter the sides. For a four-sided plot that is not a neat rectangle, also enter one diagonal.
  4. Read the area in every unit in the table.

Area formulas the calculator uses

Shape Formula
Rectangle or square Area = length × width
Triangle (3 sides a, b, c) s = (a + b + c) ÷ 2; Area = √[s(s − a)(s − b)(s − c)] (Heron’s formula)
Four-sided plot Split along one diagonal into two triangles; Area = triangle 1 + triangle 2

The diagonal matters because four sides alone do not fix the shape of a plot. The same four sides can make a rectangle or a slanted shape with a smaller area.

Worked examples

  • 30 × 40 ft plot: 30 × 40 = 1,200 sq ft = about 111.48 sq m = 133.33 gaj.
  • Four-sided plot: sides of 100, 60, 100 and 60 ft with a diagonal of 116.62 ft give two triangles of 3,000 sq ft each, so 6,000 sq ft in total, which is about 5.51 guntha or 0.138 acre.

Tips for measuring a plot

  • Measure along the boundary walls or boundary stones, corner to corner.
  • Use a tape, not footsteps. Note each side in the same unit.
  • For an odd-shaped plot, measure a diagonal between two opposite corners.
  • For a plot with more than four sides, split it into triangles and add them up.
  • Compare your result with the area in the sale deed, the land record or the approved layout.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the area of a plot?

For a rectangle, multiply length by width. For an odd-shaped plot, measure the four sides and one diagonal, split it into two triangles and add their areas. This calculator does the maths for you.

How many square feet is a 30 by 40 plot?

A 30 × 40 ft plot is 1,200 sq ft, which is about 111.48 sq m or 133.33 gaj.

How do I find the area of a plot with unequal sides?

Measure all four sides and one diagonal. Choose “Four-sided plot” in the calculator and enter them. It works out the two triangles with Heron’s formula.

Why does the calculator need a diagonal?

Four sides do not fix the shape of a plot. The diagonal locks the shape, so the area can be worked out exactly.

How many square feet are in one gaj?

One gaj (square yard) is 9 sq ft.

Is the calculator result the legal area of my plot?

No. It is an estimate from your measurements. The legal area is the one in the land record, the approved layout or an official survey.

Results use standard values: 1 square metre = 10.7639 sq ft, 1 square yard (gaj) = 9 sq ft, 1 acre = 43,560 sq ft, 1 hectare = 2.471 acres, 1 guntha = 1,089 sq ft, 1 cent = 435.6 sq ft, 1 marla = 272.25 sq ft. Local units such as bigha and biswa vary by state. This calculator gives an estimate from the measurements you enter; the official area of a plot is the one in the land record, the approved layout or a government survey. Check it before you buy, sell or register property.
